Sport Safety Training
ARC Lifeguard Training (LGT)
American Red Cross training makes learning fun and easy. Through classroom
learning and hands-on practice, you'll learn:
. Surveillance skills to help you recognize and prevent injuries
. Rescue skills - in the water and on land
. First aid training and professional rescuer CPR - to help you prepare for any
emergency
. Professional lifeguard responsibilities like interacting with the public and
addressing uncooperative patrons
Upon successful completion of this course participants will receive an American
Red Cross Lifeguarding and First Aid certification valid for three years from
the date of completion and an American Red Cross CPR for the Professional
Rescuer Certification valid for one year from the completion of the course.
ARC Lifeguard Training (LGT) Challenge
Upon successful completion of the Challenge participants will receive an
American Red Cross Lifeguarding and First Aid certification valid for three
years from the date of completion and an American Red Cross CPR for the
Professional Rescuer Certification valid for one year from the completion of
the course. There is no instructional time during a Challenge.
Participants arrive, take a written exam and then perform skills listed below.

Prerequisites
- Participants must possess a valid American Red Cross Lifeguard Training
certificate and a valid American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer
certificate.

Skill Prerequisite
- Participants must be able to perform all skills listed as Swimming
Prerequisites on the previous page for a base level Lifeguard Training course.

Additional Lifeguarding Prerequisites - Multiple Victim
Rescue, Front and Rear Head Hold Escape, Removing Gloves, Primary Survey,
Rescue Breathing( Adult, Child, Infant), Conscious Choking (Adult, Child),
Unconscious Choking (Adult, Child, Infant), CPR (Adult, Child, Infant),
Two-Rescuer CPR (Adult), BVM (Two Rescuers), Controlling External Bleeding,
Applying a Sling and a Binder and Head, Neck and Back Immobilization on Land,
Active Drowning Victim, Submerged Passive Drowning Victim and Head, Neck and
Back Injury in the water.
American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer
This a 9-hour course that teaches a variety of skills including one- and
two-rescuer CPR, use of resuscitation masks and bag-valve masks for ventilating
victims, and how to respond in special rescue situations such as drowning. Upon
successful completion of the Course participants will receive an American Red
Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer Certification valid for one year from
the completion of the course.

American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer Review
Upon successful completion of the Challenge participants will receive an
American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer Certification valid for one
year from the completion of the course.

Prerequisites - Participants must possess a valid CPR for the Professional
Rescuer.
Certified Pool & Spa Operators
Upon successful completion of this course participants will receive a Pool and
Spa Operator certificate. Shortly after completion Harford County Health
Department will send a State of Maryland certificate. If a participant wishes
to practice in another county, they will have to go to that governing county to
obtain permission to operate in that jurisdiction. Certification is valid for 3
years.

Age Prerequisite - 16 years of age at the start of the course.

ARC Instructor Training
Water Safety Instructor - WSI
Do you want to teach swimming and water safety courses? If you are at least
17-years old and a proficient swimmer, you can become an American Red Cross
Water Safety Instructor! As a Water Safety Instructor (WSI), you can:

Upon successful completion of this course participants will receive both a
Fundamentals of Instructor Training and a American Red Cross Water Safety
Instructor certificate with authorization in the Central Maryland Chapter which
will be valid until the second December 31 following completion of the course.
Reauthorization can be obtained by teaching and submitting a course record
within your authorization period and completing any and all National Updates or
Retrainings.

Knowledge Prerequisite
- Water Safety Instructor candidates must successfully complete a precourse
written exam on the first day of the course. This exam has 25 questions. Each
candidate must score at least an 80% on this exam, that is 20 correct answers
out of 25 questions. To prepare for this candidates may want to study Chapters
2 and 13 in Swimming and Diving. This text book may be picked up at Aqua
Culture after the registration process has been completed.

Swimming Prerequisites -
-
Long shallow dive, perform a surface dive in 6-9 foot of water, retrieve a 10
pound object and bring it to the surface.

Perform a wading assist with equipment. Bring the victim safely to the side of
the pool.

Enter shallow water and approach a face down victim with a suspected spinal
injury. Use the Head Splint to establish the airway and maintain inline
stabilization.

Perform a throwing assist using a ring buoy with a line attached. Bring the
victim to the side of the pool.

Perform a reaching assist from land using equipment.

Front Crawl-50 yards.

Back Crawl-50 yards.

Sidestroke -50 yards

Breaststroke-50 yards.

Elementary Backstroke-50 yards.

Butterfly-10 yards

Standing front dive from the deck.
Note: Strokes will not be swum continuously.
Lifeguard Instructor (LGI)
Upon successful completion of this course students will receive an American Red
Cross Lifeguard Instructor certificate. This will certify (Authorization will
be automatically granted in the Central Maryland Chapter) an individual to
teach Lifeguarding, First Aid, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, Automated
External Defibrillation, Oxygen Administration and Preventing Disease
Transmission until December 31, 2004. Reauthorization can be obtained by
teaching and submitting a course record within your authorization period and
completing any and all National American Red Cross Updates or Retrainings.

Age Prerequisite - 17 years of age on or before the last
scheduled day of the course.
Certification Prerequisite - Each participant must possess a valid Lifeguard
Training and CPR for the Professional Rescuer.

Knowledge Prerequisite
- All participants must pass a 60-question precourse written examination which
includes four sections Emergency Preparedness, Lifeguarding,First Aid and CPR
for the Professional Rescuer. A score of at least an 80% on each of the four
sections (12 correct answers out of 15 questions must be earned.

First Aid and CPR Skill Prerequisite
- Removing Gloves, Primary Survey, Rescue Breathing (Adult, Child, Infant),
Conscious Choking (Adult, Child), Unconscious Choking (Adult, Child, Infant),
CPR (Adult, Child, Infant), Two-Rescuer CPR (Adult), BVM (Two Rescuers),
Controlling External Bleeding, Applying a Sling and a Binder and Head, Neck and

Rescue Skills Test and Scenarios Prerequisite - Multiple
Victim Rescue, Front Head Hold Escape, Rear Head Hold Escape, Active Drowning
Victim Scenario, Submerged Passive Drowning Victim Rescue and Head, Neck, or
Back Injury Scenario. A scenario will begin with the recognizing the victim and
end at the point which advanced emergency personnel would arrive on the scene.
Professional Courses Available Based on Demand:
Bloodborne Pathogens Training: Preventing Disease Transmission -
A two-hour training module for employers and employees who, while on the job,
may be exposed to blood or other body fluids that could cause infection.
Employers can offer this program as part of their compliance with OSHA
regulations.
Safety Training for Swim Coaches - This course provides the
practical information swim coaches need to handle any emergency. US
Swimming coach members are required to show current proof of training in First
Aid, Cordiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Safety Training for Swim coaches.
Sport Safety Training - The American Red Cross and the United
States Olympic Committee have joined forces to develop an exciting coach for
coaches who want to keep their athletes safe. This course covers sports-related
injury prevention, first aid care and Adult CPR. An optional Child CPR
component may also be taken. This course is a must for coaches, officials and
parents of athletes.
